Purpose:

The Soong Ching Ling Children's Foundation of Canada is dedicated to improving the education, health and welfare of children in both China and Canada. It upholds the spirit of international cooperation that was personified by Soong Ching Ling (1893-1981), who received international acclaim for her dedication to the
emancipation of the Chinese people from domestic and foreign oppression and for her tireless efforts to better the lives of Chinese children.

Projects:

The Foundation provides financial support to various projects that foster understanding, cooperation and education among children from two diverse cultures. These projects currently include:

·Support for The Stars and Rain Centre for Autism in Beijing, one of the few facilities that exist in China to assist Chinese children diagnosed with autism.

·An international symposium , this year in Richmond, B.C., for professionals and practitioners in the field of early childhood education. To date, four symposia have been held in China and Canada, attracting experts in early childhood education from several countries.

·Scholarships that enable financially-needy students in the poorest areas of China to pursue an education.

·Financial support for a Chinese-speaking family support worker and supervised after-school Kids First Programme for children at risk who attend Hastings Community School in East Vancouver. This inner city school has a high population of students whose families recently immigrated from China, who are among the children in the school who benefit from these programmes. The SCLCFC also has raised funds for the Kids First programme which is a supervised after-school programme that benefits students and families of all ethnic backgrounds.

Results and Future Impact:

Statistics from 2006 suggest China is home to 265 million children under the age of 14, a full 20% of China's population. This generation is emerging at a unique point in history, where there is a tremendous disparity between the quality of life enjoyed by young Chinese who are wealthy or poor, and thriving or barely surviving.

The key to bridging this gap of opportunity is education.

The above projects actively demonstrate these virtues, and The Soong Ching Ling Children's Foundation believes that this demonstration of altruistic giving will also help to instill these virtues in the lives and hearts of children who have never previously benefitted from them.

It is the hope of the SCLCFC that the children who benefit from our programmes will become responsible and giving citizens; who are inspired to become successful, yet compassionate members of a global, socially responsible society.

In Canada the Foundation's projects have effectively assisted children of many ethnic backgrounds in their transition to life in Canada as they continue to learn about, and understand, their own unique cultural heritage.
