The Public Welfare Fund founded by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) and People's Daily arranged for a lecture on patriotism for teenagers on Aug 13.

The organizing committee invited Wang Zhiguo, son of Wang Jicai, a sentry renowned for loyally defending an isolated Chinese island, to deliver a lecture to teenagers from Sichuan province, Macao, Pengyang county in Ningxia Hui autonomous region, and Xingtai city in Hebei province.

Jing Dunquan, vice-chairman of the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), took part in the activity.

In 1986, the then 26-year-old Wang Jicai assumed the responsibility of guarding Kaishan Island in Guangyun county, Jiangsu province. He guarded the island for 32 years with his wife until he died on duty at the age of 58.

After Wang passed away, his son Wang Zhiguo took on his father's mantle and joined the coastguard as well.

During the ceremony, Wang Zhiguo vowed to follow in his father's footsteps and devote himself to safeguarding the Chinese border.

"It reminded me of when I hoisted the national flag for the first time in my life", said Zhang Yifeng, a 17-year-old student from Haojiang Middle School, when describing how he felt when he saw a video of Wang Jicai raising the national flag on the island.
