2022 Begonia Poetry Reading and Begonia Culture Festival at the Soong Ching Ling Former Residence successfully held in Beijing

In April each year, blooming begonias light up the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling in Beijing. Recently, 2022 Begonia Poetry Reading and Begonia Culture Festival at the Soong Ching Ling Former Residence was successfully held in Beijing. Yu Qun, a member of the Party leadership group and vice chairman of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), and Chen Dehai, secretary-general of the ASEAN-China Center, delivered speeches. Famous broadcasters, artists and poetry fans recited classics, sang and danced at the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, offering a feast of culture, peace and friendship.

Yu Qun introduced in his speech that the two time-honored malus x micromalus in the courtyard of the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling were dubbed "The King of Begonias" in Beijing. They were favored by international visitors. He said that the Begonia Poetry Reading and Begonia Culture Festival has successfully promoted cultural exchanges and enhanced friendship. According to Yu, CSCLF cooperated with the China-ASEAN Center to implement the consensus reached at the ASEAN-China Special Summit to Commemorate the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations last year and join hands to build a world featuring peace, prosperity, beauty and friendship.

 

Chen Dehai said that ASEAN countries and China are linked by mountains and rivers, and enjoyed a long history of friendly relations. The late Honorary President of the People's Republic of China Soong Ching Ling has established profound friendship with leaders of many ASEAN countries. Over the years, CSCLF has attached great importance to China-ASEAN relations, and has made positive contributions to deepening people-to-people and cultural exchanges and promoting people-to-people ties. It has played an irreplaceable and important role in promoting exchanges between the youth of the two sides and cementing China-ASEAN friendship from generation to generation.

The staff at the Soong Ching Ling Former Residence presented an original poetry recitation "Begonia Blossoms of Love - Friendship between Sun Yat-sen, Soong Ching Ling and the people of ASEAN countries."

The event was hosted by Beijing Radio and Television (BRTV) presenters Wang Yang and Mou Dan. Famous poet A Zi and dubbing actor Zhou Yang recited a poem titled "Ode to Ice and Snow" and BRTV host Li Rui recited a poem titled "Bird Calls from Ceres" as a salute to the Winter Olympics; BRTV host Wu Yewei recited a poem "Song of the Silk Road"; Li Ling recited the poem "Ideal" to the violin performance; famous reciter Hu Lemin delivered a performance of "I Praise the World."

Some children recited "ABC of Sound Meters in Chinese Poetry" in unison, a Kunqu opera performer put on a show of "Stroll in the Garden", and the staff of Xicheng District Shichahai Street Office sang "China in Lights".

Themed "Begonia Blossoms to the Future," the event aimed to strengthen the capital's function as "four centers", namely, the national political center, cultural center, center for international exchanges, and center for scientific discovery and technological innovation, show the charm of Chinese culture, and deepen the exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

With the support of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) and China-ASEAN Center, the event was co-organized by the Publicity Department of the Xicheng District Party Committee, the Xicheng District Culture and Tourism Bureau, and the Management Center of the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling. It was undertaken by the Xicheng District Reading Promotion Center and co-sponsored by the Xicheng District Shichahai Street Office. The event went on with no audience due to COVID-19. It was aired on over 10 media platforms including CCTV. People's Daily, Xinhua, Beijing Daily and other media reported the event.
