The second season of the charity project Master Lectures for Children jointly supported by China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) and Tencent was launched on Dec. 16, 2021. Three scientists - Qi Faren, Ouyang Ziyuan and Wang Yifang - were invited to lecture on popular topics among children, such as manned spaceflight, moon exploration and high energy physics. Released on the youth model of Tencent's media platforms, the lectures are open to children and teenagers across the country.

Speaking in one of the lectures, Qi Fazhen, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the first chief designer of the Shenzhou manned spacecraft, explained that "Chinese astronauts will explore extraterrestrial celestial bodies, first the moon, and finally to Mars. This task won't be finished in our hands. You, the younger generation who come after us, shall shoulder the responsibilities… Now, you are the observers, but I hope you will be participants of space exploration in the future."

"Dear children, I have talked about our hope for the future lunar exploration... I hope that these seeds of great hopes could grow into trees," said Ouyang Ziyuan, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the first chief scientist of China's lunar exploration program, of his dream that future generations will carry the legacy of building a lunar research station.

"Isaac Newton realized that the apple falling to the ground and the movement of the celestial bodies were subject to the same laws of physics. It is a fantastic association," said Wang Yifang, director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the CAS.

Together, the three academicians used vivid but easy-to-understand language for explaining scientific phenomena and their underlying causes.

Qi Fazhen explained the technical principles of satellites and spacecraft by telling the story of the Dongfanghong-1 and Shenzhou-5 spacecraft. Likewise, Ouyang Ziyuan described the lunar environment and its geological evolution while also introducing the current progress of China's lunar exploration program. Wang Yifang took the opportunity to talk about the wonders of physics and explained the properties of "ghost particle" neutrinos.

The concepts were further illustrated by animations, experiments, gifts and other unique methods to make the scientific knowledge more intriguing and fascinating. Meanwhile, the academics encouraged young people to maintain their curiosity and discover the scientific principles and mysteries of the universe, study hard and continue to explore and forge ahead.

The Master Lectures for Children program provides high-quality content for young people. Scientists, artists and inspiring role models are invited to share their experiences and knowledge thus boosting the well-rounded development of China's youth.

This project is an important initiative by CSCLF and Tencent to implement their strategic cooperation framework agreement. It also marks a new foray into adapting the possibilities of the internet and media platforms, using social resources to produce high-quality virtual content for young people, and creating a clean and safe digital environment for their growth. Both parties agreed on the common responsibility of caring for the healthy growth of the young and promised to further strengthen their cooperation.
